What is PUBG Training?

Training is a unranked map in BATTLEGROUNDS on a 2x2km island. It’s purpose is to test weapons and help players control weapons recoil.

  • The map started development in sometime in 2017 stated from a developer stream [1].
    • Training got revealed on August 22nd, 2018 [2].
    • This map was introduced in the Test Server PC 1.0 update #21.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Training in detail

Training lets 5 – 20 players practice all aspects of PUBG, from driving the game’s various vehicles around the island’s race tracks, to practicing parachute landings on scattered targets, to mastering the perfect peek shot. There are even areas to practice vaulting, close-quarters combat and of course, vehicle jumps. Training will give new players a better understanding of the basics of navigation, looting, shooting, driving and parachuting. Casual players should have fun experimenting in our expansive playground environment; stunt driving, boat racing and exploring the island. More serious players should enjoy learning about deeper gunplay; how the attachments, scopes, recoil, zeroing and bullet-drop influence their shots.

Update history

Update #21 – vN/A
  • Added a Training Mode where you can practice all aspects of PUBG gameplay
  • The Training Mode map is 2×2 in size
  • You can join through matchmaking by clicking on the “Training Mode” button in the lobby.
    • When there are more than 5 players in the matchmaking queue, the session will start immediately. Players will continue to join open sessions for up to 5 minutes after they start. (Up to 20 per session)
    • If there are less than 5 players in the matchmaking queue, matchmaking will continue for 5 minutes
    • If there are still less than 5 players after 5 minutes, the session will start with the original number of players present and other players cannot join the session.
    • Total play time is 30 minutes (e.g. in case of number 2, where you immediately enter a session, you have 5 minutes where other players can join the session + regular training mode playing time of 25 minutes)
    • Players cannot drop below 1hp in Training mode

Pre-release

  • August 22nd; Currently, you can’t play on the map solo, only with 4 – 19 friends or 4 – 19 random players. [3]
    • Update: Added clarification on queues. Players will always solo queue and use the matchmaking system to find their session of 5 – 20 players. You will not need to find any other players yourself to jump in and play Training Mode.

FAQ

August 2018

  • Q: Why did Training/Shooting range come first to PUBG Mobile?
A: "We face different challenges to doing it on mobile and doing in on PC. We have different internally priorities for the PC version so it just takes some time." [4]
  • Q: Why not an offline shooting range?
A: "We'd love to add a sort of an offline shooting range type thing but we have some techinical issues preventing us to do that at the moment. Let's see what we do in the future, but I can't say yes or no right now." [5]

What is PUBG Sanhok?

Sanhok (Codename: Savage) is the 3rd playable map but the 4th map in total for BATTLEGROUNDS, Sanhok is a 4x4km island compared to other maps that are 8x8km. Sanhok is the first map where BATTLEGROUNDS implemented a dynamic circle. This dynamic circle sees how many players are alive then will calculate if the blue zone should move faster or slower throughout the match.

  • The map started development in sometime in 2017 [1], then got revealed in March 2018 [2].
    • Sanhok became available on June 22nd, 2018 for PC.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Sanhok in detail

Sanhok is the first map that the art team of PUBG Corp visited a location specifically for world art development. By physically being in the jungles and mountains in a humid Asian country, it not only made them imagine what the new map will play like, but they felt the breeze, smelled the air and heard the sounds. All of these experiences are helping the team create a unique map experience.

The map is inspired by a wide variety of islands in Thailand and the Philippines, the PUBG Art team; comprised of Technical Artists, Concept Artists and 3D Environment Artists, they took photos (Photogrammetry) to capture the island then transfer that to the game engine to design Sanhok [3].

Update history

Update #17.1 – vN/A
  • MMR based matchmaking is now active on Sanhok.

Update #17 – vN/A

  • Visual improvements have been made to Sanhok.
    • Ruins
      • Added cracked bells, mossy rubble piles, and a new cap on the central palace.
    • Cliffs / Rocks
      • Enhanced the look of cliffs and rocks mapwide.

Update #15 – v4.3.4.6

  • Certain settings have been customized specifically for Sanhok to better fit its unique design. Details are below.
    • Performance
      • Faraway players and vehicles aren’t rendered the same way on Sanhok, resulting in some server performance improvements.
    • Gameplay
      • Weather in Sanhok changes dynamically.
      • Players can throw apples while waiting to board the plane in the in-game lobby.
    • Redzone
      • The redzone is smaller and shorter-lasting on Sanhok.
      • The center of the redzone appears outside of the playzone (the white circle). This means players are more at risk when outside of the playzone.
    • Bluezone
      • Bluezone on Sanhok has shorter waiting times and longer travel times.
      • The bluezone is also dynamic. It checks remaining player numbers before deciding the next circle, adjusting the waiting time and travel time accordingly (this doesn’t affect circle size).
    • Spawn Balance
      • The item spawn rules have been customized on Sanhok to get you equipped for battle faster.
      • ARs, SMGs, and DMRs are spawned more often. The total item spawn rate has been increased 5% compared to that found in the fourth round of Sanhok testing.
      • 8x scopes and 15x scopes don’t spawn on Sanhok. However, they may still be obtained from care packages.

Background

Sanhok is a map based within the Southeast Asia region.

FAQ

  • Q: Why did it take so long to build this map?
A: Building new maps is an enormous effort, usually takes 6 – 9 months building one from scratch.[4]

Trivia

  • The name of the map was revealed by the Developers on May 7th 2018. [5]
  • First, the Thai word for “fun:” สนุก (pronounced like “sah-nook”). Second, the Filipino (Tagalog) word for “chicken:” manok (pronounced like “mah-nok).” Combine the two and you get Codename: Savage’s new name; Sanhok (pronounced “sah-nok).”

A: Building new maps is an enormous effort, usually takes 6 – 9 months building one from scratch.[1]
  • Q: The map went from 4×4 to 8×8?
A: It should originally be only 4x4 km, but we decided against it. This was ultimately too small for a Battle Royale with 100 players. [2]

What is PUBG Erangel?

Erangel is the main playable map (and first map) of BATTLEGROUNDS, Erangel is a 8x8km island.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Erangel in detail

The Erangel map is the base map for the game. It’s pocked with small croppings of buildings, each with a good distance between them, necessitating the use of vehicles to move between areas. As the game continues, the map area will be restricted to a smaller and smaller play area. A red circle will result in bombing. Along side of adapting to red zones and the circle, Erangel has different weather each time you play in which you have to adapt your shooting, visibility and tactics.

In order to make your best use of this map, you really need to be aware of where the players often congregate. Any groupings of three or more buildings can be a huge choke point where a lot of players are at, meaning you could die really fast. When clearing areas, make sure you approach in prone and without openly firing – this will help hide your location.

Additionally, take your time clearing buildings. It’s much easier to move through buildings one room at a time, clearing each, than it is to run through trying to get everything as fast as you can with the hope of not wiping. Remember – it’s better to get poor gear and live than it is to get great gear and die immediately.

The name Erangel was chosen because PLAYERUNKNOWN’s daughter is called Eryn.[1]

Update history

Update #19 – v4.5.11.10
  • Dynamic weather has been added to Erangel.

    • Added trees in the open area surrounding the Sosnovka Military Base.

Update #12 – v3.8.21.9

  • Removed the glass from all windows with bars on Erangel.

Update #7 – v3.7.18.3

  • Reduced burden on GPU by optimizing buildings in Erangel.

Official release PC 1.0 Update – v3.5.5.6

  • Removed rainy and foggy weather from Erangel.

Early Access (Week 30 Update) – v2.6.36.7

  • Decreased the starting island item spawn levels in order to adjust the item balance on the northeast side of Erangel.

Background

Erangel is a fictional island in the black sea abandoned near Russia where a military occupation was controlling it. The military occupation tested chemical/biological experiments on the islands population. After a resistance attack on a biological facility, the island had to be abandoned.

Erangel was originally occupied by Soviet forces from the 1950’s onwards and was used as a military testing facility, which explains the military base as well as the hospital and storage facilities. A local resistance movement fought to reclaim the island which eventually lead to the island becoming abandoned. The electrical field that you see wreaking havoc on the island is powered by electrical emitters which were used to contain towns that were showing signs of revolting against the Soviet forces.[2]

FAQ

Q: Will Bluehole ever go back and polish up the map after Early Access? | A: Yes, after 1 or 2 years they will go back and polish it.
